ALN-RAA

March 26, 2010.

A teleconference on March 26 with representatives of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC)'s Secretariat and Literacy Expert Advisory Group, was organized to present the Canadian Lifelong Learning Network proposal et discuss the issue of lifelong learning in Canada and in CMEC'S structure. March 18, 2010.

The ALN Executive Committee met in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on March 18, 2010. The agenda included discussions on strategy to engage provinces, territories and organizations; the presetn financial situation; the study of the Logic Model; and the organization of ALN's secretariat.

February 12, 2010

The Director Danielle Charron took part in the consultation process put forth by the Fédération canadienne pour l'alphabétisation en français (FCAF), [the Canadian federation for literacy in French], in Moncton on February 12, 2010. The initiative Tous à bord! Pour apprendre, tout au long de la vie... [All aboard! For lifelong learning] was the opportunity for stakeholders to talk about issues facing provincial literacy, to identify the potential for collaboration and to have a better understanding of the new governance model at the pan-Canadian level. January 20, 2010

The January teleconference of the Network Committee took place Wednesday, January 20, 2010. The proposal document and the February-April 2010 action plan were discussed.

January 13, 2010

Members of the Executive Committee and the Finance Committee met in Montreal on January 13 to update the action plan and review the key issues of the financial proposal to provincial and territorial governments and to the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC).

November 19, 2009

The draft of the Consultation Paper was submitted to Network Committee members for their comments and suggestions. The document presents the project of building a lifelong learning network where Anglophone, Francophone and Aboriginal groups will find a real exchange place to create partnerships, to share strategies and to further research. A polished draft will then be presented to the groups' key stakeholders. A final document could be submitted to governmental authorities by next January.

 

LITERACY

March 18-19, 2010

Members of the Atlantic Acadian and Francophone Literacy Commission (CAFAA) met in Dartmouth (Nova Scotia) on the evening of March 18 and morning of March 19, 2010. Danielle Charron, member of the commission, participated. A special meeting took place with Sylvie Martin, Regional Coordinator of the Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training (CAMET). She made a presentation on the CAMET's structure and the publicity campaign that will be organized by a company beginning in April. The CAFAA will send a letter to the CAMET stating the points of agreements of the action plans. The objective is to begin a dialogue and set up a consultation with the firm responsible for the publicity campaign.

January 19, 2010

A meeting took place on January 19, 2010, between Linda Haché of the Atlantic Acadian and Francophone literacy commission (CAFAA), Éric Mathieu and Romain Blanchard of the Société nationale de l'Acadie (SNA) and Rhéal Poirier, General Secretary of the Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training (CAMET). The CAFAA platform and objectives were discussed. A further meeting of CAFAA members and representatives of the CAMET has been scheduled for March 19, 2010, within the context of the CAFAA meeting and the SNA meeting in Dartmouth (NS). The aim is to discuss joint actions.

October 7, 2009

The Société Nationale de l’Acadie (SNA) announced the creation of an Atlantic Acadian and Francophone literacy commission, the CAFAA. The Director of the ALN-RAA, Danielle Charron, was a member of the September 2008 Atlantic Literacy Forum planning committee and will continue her work with the commission. See press release. The ALN-RAA is pleased to continue being an active partner in improving literacy and in building a culture of lifelong learning.

September 25, 2009

The Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training (CAMET) launched a five-year action plan to raise the level of literacy of all Atlantic Canadians. See press release. This action plan fits very well within the strategy of the new CAFAA commission of the SNA (see above).

 

ADULT LEARNERS

January 25, 2010

Adult learners often seek information on how to find learning opportunities. The ALN is pleased to answer their e-mails and point them in the right direction. Here is an example of a request for information:
"I am a struggling adult trying to go back to school to get my GED so i can take a course for a unit clerk. Can you please explain to me how this works if my understanding is correct .I as an aged student would be accepted to some courses based on learned knowledge and do not really have to do this BIG struggle i have from being out of school for so long . I have been out of school since i was 15 and am now trying to go back to get a GED at age 46 and am having alot of difficulties because i work full time i have to try to do this GED online and am so far out of the loop i am lost . Could you please give me more information on this adult learning and also please let me know who i could contact in Calgary Ab

The Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCU) began a consultation in regards to the International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW) in Canada, March 1-7, 2010. Teleconferences in French and English took place with partners interested in the event. Given her vast and successful experience with the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre’s Knowledge Exchange projects, Danielle Charron was able to recommend partners who participated to the IALW’s projects in 2008 and 2009. For example, the names of a Quebec aboriginal assembly and an educational institution providing services to First Nations will be added to the CCU list.

 

FIRST NATIONS

October 28-29, 2009

The 7th Annual UQAT First Nations Symposium took place October 28 and 29, 2009, at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) in Val d’Or, Québec. The theme Programs and Services offered to Aboriginal Peoples: Towards Quality in Education fills a need to share expertise and knowledge and to produce an overall picture of the situation inside and outside Québec. AdLKC’s report on The Roundtable on Aboriginal Post-Secondary Education in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia May 12, 2009, was sent to the coordinator of the event.

 

LIFELONG LEARNING

December 2, 2009

An MCCE eventThe Imperative of Lifelong Learning was held on Monday, October 26,2009 in Halifax Nova Scotia and participants were able to continue the discussion during a follow-up meeting on December 2, 2009.
